I would look for essays that I thought were at least challenging and that required no special skills or writing ability. For example, I would use a crossword puzzle, a simple math question, or perhaps something about country fairs. Now, however, I am less sure that this is the best approach, and I think that there are still some very challenging essay topics for fourth graders. However, this does not mean that they should be completely devoid of any sense of humor. Indeed, having a little bit of humor can go a long way towards improving one's writing skills. What I am suggesting here is a little bit of revision. Once you get past this amount, the challenge just gets more difficult. One other tip that I have for challenging essay topics for fourth graders is to utilize as many tools that you have at your disposal. For example, if you are a writer, you can use your pen or pencil. If you have a friend or family member who is a writer, you can always borrow their pen or pencil.
